Islam is a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness. The word Islam is derived from the word “Salam,” which means peace. Islam, therefore, is a religion of peace; it entails the total submission to the will of Allah, which means God in English. It is a total way of life for its followers, a religion of mutual understanding and reconciliation, a religion that educates its adherents on how to eat, dress, talk, and relate with others.
So, what does the religion of Islam teach? Who are the followers of this religion? And how does the real Islam differs from the one portrayed by the Western media? This article tries to answer these questions.
Who is a Muslim?
The word Muslim simply referred to a male person who practices the religion of Islam. “What about a female follower of Islam?” you might probably ask. She is referred to as a Muslimah. For example, Ahmad is a Muslim; Fatima is a Muslimah.
Having clarified that, the term Muslim is used to describe Muslims across all genders. A Muslim is anyone who gives total submission to the will of God, believes in the oneness of God, believes that God creates mankinds, angels, and jins.
Every Muslim believes that God choose some among his creatures as messengers, and sends them to the mankinds to guide them, beginning from Adam (A.S) to Muhammad (peace be upon him).
In addition, a Muslim believes that God revealed some scriptures to his messengers. He also believes that all that has happen to him is from God, and also believes in the last day when God gather all his creatures and judge between them accordingly.
Qualities of a Pious Muslim
A pious Muslim or Muslimah is the one who follows the correct teachings of Quran and Sunnah. A pious Muslim has good relations with his fellow men and with his parents. Also, a pious Muslim is an example of sincere and good character to his wife, children, neighbors, and community at large.
It is also important to note that a pious Muslim is not a saint; he often commits sins but frequently repent to his creature—God the Almighty.
The Real Islam Vs the One Portrayed by the Western Media
The world’s media especially that of the West have the habit of labeling any act of violence carried out by Muslims as “terrorism.” However, when the same act is carried out by a non-Muslim, they will call it “domestic violence.”
The same act with different name!
Well, whatever they call it, Islam does not encourage terrorism. In fact, Islam clearly condemns it in the Holy Quran (5:32) where Allah says: "Killing of one soul is like killing of all humanity.”
Also, Imam Bukhari narrated that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said “Whoever kills a popular welcome not promising heaven.”
Muslim scholars all over the world have condemned terrorism and issued a Sharia ruling against it. Though some Muslims kill innocent souls, this does not mean that Islam supports their action. When a drunkard driver hit a large number of passersby in New York last month, no one blames the car manufacturer that the terrorist used to carry out his attacks.
You cannot blame a religion with over 1.6 billion people as well just for a terrorist act committed by a few so-called Muslims. According to a recent terrorism study, "Far right extremism violence caused 272 deaths between 1990-2016 more than twice as many as 130 deaths from Islamic extremism during the same period.”
Islam is a religion of kindness, mutual understanding, and tolerance. It instructs its followers to always do good and shun away from committing evil deeds, such as murder, terrorism, rape, and racism.
It is a religion of peace not a religion of terrorism.
